What is a city-state? A city-state is a city that has its own laws, government, and land.
What kept the city-states independent of each other? They were kept independent of each other because it was hard to travel between them.
Why did the city-states have to work together? They had to work together to keep their irrigation systems.
Why did Sumerians move into larger communities? They moved into larger communities to maintain irrigation systems, have food, and be protected.
Why did city-states fight with each other? They fought over land and water rights.
What were the inventions of the Mesopotamians? Why were these inventions important? Wheel- used by potters, on carts, and on chariots. Arch- added strength and beauty. Irrigation and plows-steady food supply. Writing- written communication.
What was used to protect city-states from attackers? Strong walls and moats protected city-states.
What does the name Mesopotamia mean? The land between two rivers.
