Who united Upper and Lower Egypt? King Menes
What happened in the Old Kingdoms? Money spent on public works order was restored.
What happened in the Middle Kingdoms? Built the pyramids, at the end it became weak and divided.
What happened in the New Kingdoms? There was a focus on expanding the Empire and money was spent on war.
What is a cataract? A large waterfall or steep rapids.
What is a delta? A triangular plain at the mouth of a river, formed when sediment is deposited by flowing water.
What is silt? A fine soil found on the river bottoms.
What is papyrus? An early form of paper made from reedlike plants found in the marshy lands of the Nile delta.
What is a pharaoh? A King in Ancient Egypt.
What is a dynasy? A series of rulers from the same family.
What is absolute power? Complete control over someone or something.
What is a regent? Someone who rules for a child until the child is old enough to rule.
What is afterlife? A life after death.
What is a mummy? A dead body preserved in lifelike conditions.
What is a pyramid? A huge building with four sloping triangle-shaped sides: Built as royal tombs.
What is Giza? An ancient Egyptian city site: Site of the Great Pyramids.
What is an astronomer? A scientist who studies the stars and other objects in the sky.
What is a calendar? A table or register with the days of each month and week in a year: used to keep track of time.
What was their religion? Polytheism, Gods: Amon-Re, Isis, Osiris, etc.
How did religion affect their everyday lives? They believed in life after death and the Gods. The Gods helped them realize when the floods came and they gave food and supplies to them.
What was the Nile so important to the Egyptians? It gave them water, papyrus, crops, bathing water, etc.
How did we learn to read hieroglyphics? The Rosetta Stone helped us read the hieroglyphics with Demotic, and Greek with the hieroglyphs.
What is the Rosetta Stone? A Stone from Ancient Egypt that has 3 languages of a message: Hieroglyphics, Demotic, and Greek
How do they remove the brain of a person when mummifying? A hook was inserted through the nose and taken out through the nose.
Which body part was left inside of the mummy and why? it was thought of as the place of wisdom, intelligence in the body. If the deceased were ever to reach the Beyond it was essential that the body and heart were not separated (the heart was needed in the Weighing of the Heart ceremony).
