Himalayas Separates India and China, a major boundary of China that lead to its isolation.
Huang He Major river in china, the grand canal connected it to the Yangtze and was a major source of trade.
Yangtze Longest river in China, major source of trade, and people lived along it for the wealth. More southern river.
Confucianism Based on teachings of Confucius during the Warring States Era. Values education and respect. The 5 relationships= big part. Filial Piety= respect of elders. Support of the civil service exam-> changes social classes in China.
Fillial piety same as fillial duty. Sons and daughters respect parents and elders.
Daoism (Taoism) Balance, embrace good and bad, everything happens for a reason, Wu Wei= action through nonaction. Laozi= started it
Legalism Han Fei started it-> wrote Han Feizi on Legalist ideas. Strict harsh punishments, rewards for good, and assume people are born bad/evil. During the Qin Dynasty it flourishes.
Yin and Yang Symbol of Taoism that represents balance
Mandate of Heavan Major force behind the rise and fall of dynasties, is the divine approval of a ruler. If things start going wrong then they are said to have lost this approval.
Dynastic Cycle The transition from dynasty to dynasty in china and the winning of the mandate of heaven to eventually losing it. The order is= Qin-Han-3 Kingdoms, period of disunity, and the Sui- Tang- Song-Yuan-Ming.
Qin Dynasty Legalist, standardized weight, measures, money, and language, status based on # of heads cut off, built the Great Wall, roads built, burn books and high taxes. Fell from an angry revolt.
Han Dynasty Confucianist-> civil service exam, paper-making, rudder, wheel barrows, strong govt and economy, then the roads=desrepair and peasants revolt which leads to the 3 kingdoms, period of disunity and the Sui.
Great Wall of China built by Qin Shi Huang to protect from invaders like the Mongols. It was a symbol of China's power and it also caused the death of many workers along the way.
Tang Dynasty Enlarge the civil service exam, built Grand Canal, GOLDEN AGE, then with tax and desrepair of the road there is a rebellion.
Grand Canal Connects the Yangtze and the Huang He so that trade can flourish- i.e. food from good farming in south can be sent north.
Song Dynasty center of farming and the rice crops improved,
