| What does "taxation without representation" refer to? | This phrase refers to the idea that the Colonists were having to pay taxes that King George III imposed, but the Colonists had no say in it. (Pgs. 356 & 357) |
| What was the Stamp Act of 1765? | This law put a tax on all printed materials (newspapers, pamphlets, playing cards, legal documents, college diplomas, etc.). Colonists had to buy special paper with the stamp on it. (Pg. 356) |
| What happened during the Boston Massacre? | British troops were sent to occupy Boston, Massachusetts because Colonists were angry over the Stamp Act. Eventually, the two groups confronted each other, British troops fired on the Colonists, and killed 5 people. (Pg. 357) |
| Why is Lexington and Concord called "the shot heard 'round the world"? | It is called this because the shots fired there started the American Revolution and set off a series of other wars for democratic government. (Pg. 358) |

| What was the "Estates - General"? | This was a group made up of representatives of each of the three estates in France. King Louis XVI (16th) convened this governing body in 1789 - the first time in 175 years that had been done! (Pg. 372) |
| Why did members of the Third Estate get angry during the 1789 meeting? | The Third Estate grew angry because there were more of them (600) at the meeting, they represented more people, but they only had 1 vote in the Estates - General. The 1st & 2nd estates could always outvote them! (Pg. 372) |

| What was the Tennis Court Oath? | This oath was sworn by members of the 3rd Estate who were denied access to their meeting hall. They ended up meeting on an indoor tennis court and swearing to meet until a Constitution was written. (Pg. 373) |
| What happened during the "Storming of the Bastille"? | During this event, people living in Paris, France went to the Bastille (a "hated symbol of royal power") to take it over. The Bastille was full of weapons and ammunition. Finally, the Bastille governor surrendered & was killed. The people got weapons. |
