Directional Terms

QuestionAnswer
Superior towards the head or upper part of a structure.
Inferior away from the head or towards the lower part of the structure.
Ventral (anterior) toward the front of the body.
Dorsal (posterior) towards the back of the body.
Medial towards the middle of the body.
Lateral towards the side of the body.
Ipsilateral on the same side of the body.
Contralateral on the opposite side of the body.
Proximal closet to the point of attachment.
Distal away from the point of attachment.
Superficial away from the internal portion.
Deep towards the internal portion.
Parietal part of the membrane lining the wall of the cavity.
Visceral the membrane which covers the organs in the cavity.
