Erik the Red and Leif Ericson (1000) Farmland was scarce in Scandanavia. Wanted to find new areas with good farmland. Discovered Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland.

Christopher Columbus (1492) Wanted to find a shorter sea route from Europe west to Asia
Christopher Columbus (1492) Thought he reached Asia when in fact he discovered the Caribbean
John Cabot (aka Giovanni Caboto) (1497) Wanted to find the gold, riches, and silks of Asia. Worked for England. Found Canada. Became a hero of England and given an english name. Found fish so plentiful he could catch them with a basket.
Amerigo Vespucci (1499) Italian sailor and captain didn't believe Columbus found Asia. In 1499 sailed just south of where Columbus landed and realized he discovered a new continent.

Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1513) Spaniard proved Vespucci's idea that Columbus had found a previously uncharted land.

Francisco Pizarro (1531 - 1535) Explored the west coast of South America searching for the riches of the Incan Empire.
Francisco Pizarro (1531 - 1535) Captured the Incan emperor when he refused to convert to Christianity and accept the King of Spain as his ruler. The Spanish then conquered the Incan empire.
Jacques Cartier (1534 - 1541) French Navigator trying to find a northwest passage and search for gold
Jacques Cartier (1534 - 1541) He made 3 voyages for France. He sailed into the St Lawrence River, established relations with the Iroquois and brought corn back to Europe (1st time many had seen corn).
Samuel de Champlain (1603-1615) Went to North America to make maps of the places beavers were found in order to get rich in the fur trade.
Samuel de Champlain (1603-1615) Explored parts of eastern Canada and along the St. Lawrence River.

Henry Hudson (1609 -1611) Searched for northwest passage to Asia.
Henry Hudson (1609 -1611) He originally travelled northeast from Holland. His crew forced him to turn back due to frigid conditions and search for the Northwest Passage through North America.
