ultra nationalism..? -early 1900s industrial and imperial in full swing -countries develop ultra nationalism for their country -more domination, stronger armies
arms race. explain as one army get bigger, the next gets bigger and the next. want to be the biggest and best .. very powerful armies with weapons and people
alliances..? Triple Entente: Britain FRance Russia Triple Alliance: Germany Austria-Hungary Italy if one country gets attacked one by one they will join, no longer a little war

First modern war modern warfare more like guerrilla war fare poison gas machine guns tanks, no longer standing in a field with muskets.
Stalemate the part in the war that is just a standstill. no progress in trenches. completely stopped yet still trying to fight
Trench warfare: smelly, lonely, dead everywhere, people going insane trench foot is horrible, people wanting to die, series of trenches; like 4 rows, wet. miserable.
"live and let live" required by gov. to shoot but dont do it at lunch or while sleeping, just wanted to make life a little more barable.
"Christmas Truce" were all nice to eachother on Christmas. came in contact with eachother. it was not the men who wanted to fight, it was the governments. by now the men just wanted to either die or go home, they were miserable.
Weapons: Tank, Grenade, Rifle(most common), Flame Throwers, Machine Guns(most important of WWI) Poison gas(chemical warfare)
MAchine gun:importance men cant go into other trench, they would try and get slaughtered. made stalemate and trenches happen. welcome to modern warfare.
Women!! took the jobs of men while they were at war, were able to experience the freedoms of man, and show that they could have regular jobs like the men. led to changes in society:opened mens eyes. could be nurses or drivers to , in frontline sometimes. r.t.v.

Why did Italy side with the Alliances? wanted Austrian land (Austria crumbled) so in 1915 they join the alliances.

Why US join War now?? Wilson campaigned of staying out of war, But Louistania is sunk::: Germans have sunk US ships have trade connections with Fand GB Know it is a big deal, want to be involved in post war decisions

October 1918 both Ottoman and Austria-Hungary collapse ( O sign treaty with alies) Germany is left alone to fight.
1917 December Russia and Germany sign treaty cease fire/ russia dropped out.
November 9 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany abdicates
November 11, 1918 Germany signs armistice with Allied Powers.
Was anyone conquered? no.

War Guilt Clause: Germany must take full blame for war.
Reparations: Germany has to pay 33 billion $$to france g.Britain and Belgium.
Military:: Germanys military cannot go over 100,00 men.(nothing) Rhineland: inbetween f and g is demilitarized. nothing leading to war can be in rhineland.
Loss of Land:: Germany loses land to make Poland Alsace Lorraine(COAL) is returned to France Germany must give up over seas colonies, everything since 1841 is gone
League Of Nations:: Woodrows idea, council of nations to ensure peace and settle disputes, Us not in it because of congress. try to talk out and save problems , to prevent war. Russia not in it.
When germany signs treaty: -no kaiser, -milions dead -uprisings against war -new gov that agrees to treaty but the people hate them
From beginning of war was russia prepared?? no - not enough weapons, >1million short - fodd was going to armies and shortages occured.
Ripe For Revolution millions were dead enormous loss of land many suffering lack of food factory workers on strike nation declining, people afraid, threat of foreign occupation, couldnt do anything else

March Revolution price of bread skyrocketed, women angry nd exhausted, want peace and bread, more people even gaurds join 15th= YTsar Nicholas II abdicates
Vladimir Lenin had been expelled from russia, but Germnay wanted to cause trouble and sent him back. ends up being first communsit leader of russia. leader of Bolsheviks.
Big mistake of bourgeoisie after Tsar abdicates: chose to stay in war. Bolshviks go around and spread communism
November 1917 Revolution: Bolshviks establish a communist gov't in russia, V. lenin becomes first communist leader of Russia

Why do peasants not want Communism? need land to farm, sell extras; would be gov'ts land. could not make a profit or take what they wanted.

What does Lenin's new economic policy show about him? Willing to moderate change views, to stay in power and make others a little but more contents dictatorial gov't

Rapidly Industrialize started to forced people into factories wantes food to be provided/distributed, get rid of new eco policy
Collectivization peasants no longer work for private farms, but state owned ones now all food belongs to gov't. peasants burn excess crops and shoot cows and pigs in revolt.
1932-1933 Ukrainian Famine
Ukrainian Famine where most independent peasants live, in winter stalin shuts down trains so no one can leave and takes all food from the people, which is kept in graineries. approx. 7-8 mil die in one winter.
1936-1938 Stalin's Great Purges
Stalin's Great Purges -paranoid, Stalin believes that everyone is a threat had 50% of original Bolsheviks killed even Trotsky in Mexico was killed many former Bolsheviks were killed
Totalitarianism complete total control: 100s of 10000s killed or sent to Gulags in Siberia to pretty much die.
Don't Mess With Stalin!! =starves =kills =wipes out poeple =sends to concentration camps =erases from existence
Propaganda: systematic spreading of ideas, images to spread a belief or idea, to acertain a feeling.
If you control history you control the present and future. stalin would erase people from pictures like Trotsky. did not want any possible "threat" remembered. wanted assured power trippy.
