What stimulated the Italian Renaissance? contact with the more sophisticated civilizations of the Middle East and south and east Asia.
What was the Renaissance? The Renaissance, or "rebirth" was characterized by an attempt to revive the values of the classical civilizations of the Mediterranean, Greece and Rome
What was an important philosophy that was restored in the Renaissance? Humanism
What is Humanism? focusing on the accomplishments, characteristics, and capabilities of humans, not of God.
What did Nicholas Copernicus do? concluded that the geocentric theory did not make sense.
Why was the pope starting to lose his power in the renaissance? the Pope's political power was compromised as centralization of government gave more authority to kings
What caused the protestant reformation? Martin Luther didn't believe that the Pope needed to take money just to remove sins. He challenged the pope.
Who started Calvinism and what is it? John Calvin and a form of Protestant
How did Protestant get into England? John Knox brought John Calvin's belief to England.
What invention contributed greatly to the spread of Protestantism? the printing press
Who invented movable type/ printing press? the chinese and the koreans
What is the movement where the Scientific revolution was applied to social and political areas of life? The Enlightenment

Three trends that led to the Renaissance: The fall of Constantinople, The INvention of the printing press, and The rise of the middle class in Europe
How did the Fall of Constantinople lead to the Renaissance? When it fell, all the greek scrolls from Aristotle, Socrates, and others were brought form Constantinople to Italy because people were fleeing form the Muslims to western europe
How did the invention of the printing press lead to the Renaissance? The printing pres allowed the greek scrolls to be reprinted. And ideas to be shared and spread rapidly
How did the rise of the middle class lead to the Renaissance? The middle class began to focus more on self improvement, the world, and education and emphasized the idea that man was created in God's image
Who was the market for classical books? The middle class
Who are two famous humanists? Lorenzo Valla and Erasumus
What is a big difference between Medieval and Renaissance literature? Renaissance literature was targeted to the middle/common class, so they used common words
Some famous Renaissance writers: Petrarch, Boccocccio, Dante, Shakespeare, Machiavelli
Luther's beliefs that were different from Catholics: 1) he believed the Bible was the Christian’s only source of authority 2) he believed a person was saved by faith, not by the sacraments 3) he believed that each Christian was his own priest and could pray directly to God
Did Luther want his ideas to bring major changes to society or politics? No
How did the Catholic church deal with the new Protestant church? They called a meeting called The Council of Trent and they began the Counter Reformation
What did the Council of Trent decide? 1) they decided that the Bible & the Church were the believer’s authority 2) they decided that faith & works were needed for salvation 3) they reformed the church and ended a great deal of corruption 4) they decided that could only be given, not sold
What did the Counter reformation do? 1) they created the inquisition to stop heresy 2) they created the Index, a list of forbidden books 3) they created the Jesuits, a group of priest to take the Catholic religion to the New World
What is Capitalism? economic system with a division between labor and ownership
What was significant about Ivan III? He married the niece of the last Byzantine emperor and claimed that Moscow was the third rome
What was the result of Ivan the III move? He increased the power of the central Russian government and drew more land under his control
Why are aristocrats so bad to Kings? The king or leader's rule is weakened
How did the Ivan the Terrible (The fourth) deal with the Boyars? He killed many of them, Others he forced from their homes to different areas, an action that weakened their class by stripping them from the local connections that had given them power and influence
Where did the Safavids rule? Persia, Afghanistan
Where did the Mughals rule? much on india
Where did all three of the Gunpowder empires originate from? Turkic nomadic cultures
The primary reasons for the fall of the ottoman empire was: The Conservatism of the janissaries, the voyage of Vasco da Gama, and their rejection of non-muslim culture and knowldege
How did the conservativism of the Janissaries bring down the Ottoman Empire? The Janissaries rejected any new advancements in military control that would jeopardize their rule.
How did The voyage of Vasco da Gama bring down the Ottoman Empire? This opened up trade routes that did not include the Ottomans as middlemen between the Far East and Europe. As a result, their revenues declined.
How did The rejection of non-Muslim culture and knowledge bring down the Ottoman Empire? This prevented them from benefiting from European advancements in science and technology, which they considered infidel.
What type of Islam did the Safavids practice? Ottoman? S=Shii'a and Ottoman=Sunni
Did Spain have a aristocracy or bureaucracy? bureaucracy
In spain, who profited form the voyages? The king
What was the encomienda system of labor? This system gave rights to work the local population to any Spaniard who conquered Moorish/indigenous lands
After Columbus where did Spain go? and after that? To the carribeans, but disease killed most of them off. After that they went the New World
What did Spain want in the New World? they wanted to extract gold and silver
Reasons for Spanish Success: weapons and diseases
Where was the mita system used? In Peru
What is the Mita system? conquered people to send up laborers to work on state projects, mostly silver mines.
Haciendas were designed for... Local consumption
Plantations were designed for... exporting
Why did most of the labor systems in the new world declining? Because disease was wiping out the indigenous people
Where was the first sugar plantation? Brazil
What right did the Spanish believe they had to conquer the new world? The Spanish believed their right to conquer the New World was in the pope’s call to convert the natives to Christianity.
Why did the English/Dutch/French not integrate with the natives like the Spanish? White distained the culture and people they found, and thought they were lazy for not cultivating the land.
