What is imperialism? Domination by one country of the politics, economics, and/or society of another country
What is a protectorate? A country with its own government but under the control of an outside power.
What is a sphere of influence? An area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment and trading privileges.
What is extraterritoriality? The right of foreigners to be protected by the laws of their own nation.
What is economic dependence? A relationship in where less developed nations exports raw materials in exchange for manufactured goods.
What is mobilization? Preparing military forces for war.
What are reparations? Payments for war damages.
What is neutrality? A policy of supporting neither side in a war.
What is an alliance? A formal agreement between two or more nations.
What is propaganda? The spreading of ideas to promote a cause or to damage an opposing cause.
Who was Kaiser Wilhelm II? German monarch during WWI.
Who was Woodrow Wilson? U.S. President during WWI.
Who was Georges Clemenceau? French President during WWI.
Who was David Lloyd George? British Prime Minister during WWI.
Who was Archduke Franz Ferdinand? Austrian heir to the throne; his assassination sparked WWI.
What was the intention of alliances in the early 1900s? To discourage outside attacks.
How did the Industrial Revolution encourage imperialism? Needs for materials and markets.
What was used as a justification for imperialism? Social Darwinism.
What did the people of Africa, Asia, and L. America contribute to the global economy? Labor and resources.
What is a political consequence of imperialism? Increased tensions among western powers.
What did modernization mean to European powers? Accepting western culture.
What weapon contributed most to the stalemate on the Western front? Automatic machine gun.
