Definitions

QuestionAnswer
antibiotics a soluble substance derived from a mold that inhibits the growth or kills bacteria
antimicrobial a substance that kills microbes, and prevents their pathogenic actions
Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) The amount of an antibiotic needed to inhibit the growth of an organism.
Narrow spectrum an antibiotic which is effective against either GRAM negative or GRAM positive type bacteria, not both.
Broad spectrum an antibiotic that is effective against both GRAM negative and GRAM positive type bacteria
Prophylaxis is any drug or treatment used to prevent a common infection, usually a virus
