Clans Extended families that ruled over villages in Japan.
Shinto The traditional religion of Japan. Everything in nature has "kami" which helps people to live and keep them from harm.
Yamato From the western part of Honshu, the Yamato rulers used their military might to control over Japan in the 500s.
Prince Shotoku A regent of Japan that served from 593-621. He admired Chinese culture and sent scholars to learn more about China's way of life. Spread Chinese culture (philosophy and religion) throughout Japan.
Regent A person who rules a country for someone who is unable to rule alone.
Court A group of nobles who ive near and serve or advise a ruler.
Lady Murasaki Shikibu She wrote the "The Tale of the Genji" which is considered to be the world's first full-length novel. She is also one of the greatest writers in early Japanese history.
Tale of the Genji A story of a prince named Genji and his quest for love. The characters described are colorful, seem real, and describes court life in Japan in great detail.
Noh A serious form of drama created in the 1300s. Noh combines music, speaking, and dance. These plays often tell about heroes or figures from Japan's past.
Pure Land Buddhism Most common people in Japan had no time for elaborate rituals. Pure Land Buddhism developed and emphasized achieving salvation without the rituals.
Zen Buddhism The belief that neither faith nor good behavior leads to wisdom. Self-discipline and meditation can lead to it.
Daimyo Large landowners that hired samurai to protect their lands.
Samurai Professional warriors that inherited their positions from their fathers. The word means "servant" and they received land for their service. If they did not receive land, they received rice or food.
Figurehead A person who appears to rule when power rests with someone else. The emperor was the figurehead in Japan.
Shogun A general who ruled Japan in the emperor's name. They were a powerful military leader that gained control over Japan.
Bushido The samurai code of rules or "way of the warrior". This required the samurai to be brave and honorable, live simple, loyal, obedient, and to be self-disciplined.
Oda Nobunaga Started the effort to unify Japan in the 1500s.
Tokugawa Ieyasu Established the capital of Edo and unified Japan in 1603. For over 200 years, the Tokugawa Shogunate ruled over Japan.
Structure The way something is set up or organized.
Values Ideas that people hold dear to ad try to live by.
