Who was William Shakespeare? Great play wright from the Renaissance time. Wrote Romeo & Juliet, MacBeth, many sonnets, built the Globe Theater in England
Who was Michaelangleo? Great artist and scupltor during the Renaissance. Painted the Sistine Chapel, Dome of St Peters, David scuplture
Who was Martin Luther? German monk who protested some practices of the Catholic Church. He disagreed with the indulgences and he believed that the Bible should be translated into the everyday language so people could read it for themselves
Who was Henry VIII? King of England, he diagreed with the catholic Church because he wanted to divorce his wife. He statred his own church called the Church of England (Angelican Church) with him as the leader.
What was the Reformation? Time period when people questioned the Catholic Church and left it to started hundreds of new Christians sects (religions) like Lutheran, Calvinism
What was the Renaissance? time period 1300-1600 in which arts & learning flourished in Europe
What was a lasting impact of the Renaissance? The belief in human potential --your ability not your birth deterimines your worth. Also an interest and curiously to learn
What was a lasting impact of the Reformation? 1. Hundreds of new Christian sects started 2. Catholic Church power was weakened 3. Kings & Queens gained some of that power that Catholic Church used to have
What was the impact of the invention of the printing press? More books produced for cheaper making books more available so more people learned to read and write which led to the sharing of ideas from place to place.
Who was Johannes Gutenberg? Invented the printing press around 1400
What is humanism? Belief in human potential and life here on earth
What were the classics? The art anmd literature of the ancient Greeks & Romans
What is a Renaissance Man? Someone skilled in many different areas like Leonardo da Vinci who was an artist and an inventor
What was Martin Luther called by the Catholic Church? What happened to him? He was called a heretic and he was excommunicated (kicked out) from the Catholic Church
The people who disgreed with the Catholic Church and left to form new Christian sects were called_____________________ Protestants
What were the Indulgences? Why did some people protest them? Payment to the Catholic Church to have sins forgiven, they beieved it was unfair--only God could forgive sins
