What type of land mass was India commonly referred to and why? A subcontinent because it was enclosed by the Himalayas and water on two sides. This separated it majorly from asia so that it can be considered as a subcontinent.
What are the 2 rivers in India? Indus and Ganghes rivers
Which area is good for farming and why? Only the indus valley because it is the only area directly watered by the Indus
What else do the rivers of india carry and what is it good for? They both carry silt which helps keep the land fertile
What is the central part of India called? The deccan Plateau
What are monsoons? seasonal winds that dominate Indias climate
In what months is the dry season, which is wet? dry= oct-nov wet= june-oct
What were some of the challenges of monsoons? It made their water source unpredictable and also a long period of no water. There could be massive floods and also droughts.
What and where are the Himalayas? Most massive mountain range in the world in northeast India
What were the 4 main caste divisions in India? give the traditional names and who made up them. Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (rulers and warriors), Vaishyas (peasants and traders), and Shudras (laborers)
Who were the Aryans and who were the dasas? Aryans are the people who came from north of india and referred to the natives as dasas (which means dark- in reference to their skin) dasa became the aryan word for slave
What was the Vedas? 4 collections of prayers/spells/instructions that was created by the Aryans
What does Varna mean? skin color
What is so important about one's caste? You are born into it for life, it decides who you marry and eat with, and you share a common occupation with the other members of your caste.
Who lived "outside" of the caste system and why? The untouchables, or the "delits" lived outside of the caste system because they were considered unpure because their work was "dirty" (gravediggers, butchers, etc)
How was caste first decided? by race
What is Brahman and Brahma? the one supreme god spirit that controls all and is divided into many subdivisions. One of which is Brahma which is the creator
