Sahel an east-west band of semi arid land that is a transition zone between the Sahara and the savanna. Desertification is happening there due to populations growth and consumption of resources.
over cultivation growing more crops than the land can support. Erosion of topsoil and drained nutrients from the soil are the result.
overgrazing letting too many animals eat the land vegitation. the grass root system gets destroyed, so no more grass will grow there.
poor soil poor soil that is the result of erosion, or lack of nutrients being returned to the soil after it has been over used
savanna where natural vegetation is grassland with some scattered shrubs and trees. Most of the population is found there. this is where most of the farming takes place.
rainforest located in coastal West Africa and in the Congo Basin. Commercial logging is a huge threat. Still very few people love there.
slash and burn agriculture in rainforest regions: farmers clear land and burn vegitation to create fertile soil to grow crops for a few years, then the soil nutrients run out.
water scarcity lack of water in desert areas and semi arid areas like the Sahel.
lack of clean water In developed nations: industrial waste and fertilizer run-off are the cause. In undeveloped countries: lack of adequate sanitation leads to water contamination. Other major issue is parasites, snails, worms, and insects in the water.

what is the difference between an ethnic group and a religious group? an ethnic group shares a common culture, language, and heritage. A religious group is a group of people that share the same belief system. They may come from many ethnic groups.
How are the people of North Africa unified? by the fact that most of them are islamic and speak Arabic.

What 2 things unify the people of North Africa Islam and the Arabic language
What is cultural diffusion? when people bring their customs and ideas to an area while picking up new ones along the way
How has the location of North Africa contributed to cultural diffusion? Beacause it is so close to the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Also trading has influenced those areas.
The mixing of cultures in North Africa occurred through which 2 things? trade and conquest
How did the Egyptians fare in conquests? They were conquered and conquered others.
West Africa is famous for what? Its cultural diversity.
Why does west Africa have a wide variety of cultures? Many different ethnic groups live there.
What is an important change happening in West Africa? urbanization: Many people are moving from the villages to the cities

Why does East Africa have great cultural diversity? because of its location on the Indian Ocean
What is the culture of East Africa? Swahili culture
What does the Swahili culture combine? African and Arab cultures
What are 2 reasons the Swahili language is important to East Africa? because it is used for business and communication
Where did the Bantu people move out of and into? out of West Africa, and into Central and Southern Africa in search of new lands
What did the Bantu introduce? farming skills, herding lessons, and iron tools
How many people in Africa today have roots in the Bantu language? 2/3 two thirds
What religion is found among the Bantus? Traditional beliefs, Islam, and Christianity
What religion do the Ashanti practice? primarily Christian with a small percentage of Islamic
