How was peace kept in Europe during the growing tension prior to WWI? Despite rising tensions and growing military in Europe, the peace was maintained by a system of military alliances that divided Europe into two groups of allies.
Why did WWI start? WWI started because of nationalism in the Balkan Peninsula and the system of alliances that were obligated to back each other.
When did the stalemate on the Western Front occur? By December 1914, the first year of WWI, a stalemate developed on the Western Front as both sides dug in and trench warfare followed.
What effect did new technology have on the new war? As a result of new technology in WWI, more soldiers died than in any previous war.
Why is WWI called a total war? WWI is called a “Total War” because virtually every resource was used to keep up the fight and involved virtually every citizen.
Why were the Central Powers unable to defeat the allied powers, even after Russia pulled out of the war? The Central Powers were unable to defeat the Allied Powers even after Russia pulled out of the war because the United States entered the war on the side of the Allies.
What were the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles? The Treaty of Versailles’ major provisions were: the Empire of Austria-Hungary was split into new independent states, Germany was required to pay war reparations to the Allies, the Allies would set up the League of Nations.

Did Wilson achieve all fourteen of his points? Woodrow Wilson did not achieve all of the 14 points- In the Treaty of Versailles, Great Britain and France were allowed to take over Germany’s colonies in Africa. This did not satisfy his point to allow nations to govern themselves.
After WWI, artists experimented with new ways of depicting reality. What are two examples of this type of art? Dadaism and Surrealism.
What was the condition of the US after World War I? The United States had been spared the physical ruin of war and was able to prosper after WWI.
What are four societal changes that occurred after World War I? In the US, women began wearing less restrictive clothes (flappers); Musicians experimented with new forms of music (jazz, swing); People went to the movies often. In Europe, church attendance declined significantly.
What were some of the triggers of the Depression? The value of stocks plummeted and people lost money, American companies did less business overseas and Europe struggled to recover from WWI.

In communism and fascism, the government is led by a dictator, who establishes totalitarian control because it is believed that the good of society is more important than individual liberties.
What did Adolf Hitler believe about history? Adolf Hitler believed that race was the defining force in history.
