Optimum health: good health, defined as the height of physical, emotional,spiritual & intellectual health.
Compensation: middle of the continuum. may have altered health but still able to cope independently
Poor/serious health: serious health problems. can be actual or perceived, unable to manages illness independently. people with chronic illness
Premature Death: death is apart of the life cycle & we are generally more able to accept when it happens to an older person.
Stage/phase 1 of illness Preliminary Phase - the appearance of clinical signs
Stage/phase 2 of illness Acknowledgement Phase - sustained clinical signs. patient becomes more concerned.
Stage/phase 3 of illness Action Phase - seeks medical attention
Stage/phase 4 of illness Transitional Phase - diagnosis/treatment
Stage/phase 5 of illness Resolution Phase - recovery/rehabilitation or death
Culture is: languages, beliefs, values, norms & behaviours. learned through imitation & observation.
Ethnicity is: people with common racial, linguistic or cultural heritage.
Multiculturalism/Cultural Diversity: refers to people of various cultures living together in harmony & mutual respect.
SMILE principle: S Sensitivity: sensitive to client needs
SMILE principle: M Mutual Respect: you respect them & they respect you
SMILE principle: I Interest: show interest in client
