Feudalism in Europe

QuestionAnswer
What kind of places did the Viking's raid? Anywhere. anywhere they could get their ships to, witch included shallow water (2 feet). Also Monasteries
What 2 things made Vikings stop attacking Europe and Monasteries? They stated accepting Christianity and the climate in Scandinavia warmed up, making farming easier
As the Viking's started to raid less, what other group just began? The Magyars
Who were the Magyars? A group of Nomadic people
What did the Magyars do? They invaded isolated villiges and Monasteries.
What place did the Magyars overrun? Italy
What did the Magyars do to the people they raided? Capture them and sell them as slaves
What places did the Muslims attack? North Africa, Europe, and as far as Switzerland. Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts
What changed about the people during these many attacks? They looked to local rules with their own armies rather than one big army and ruler.
What was the Feudal system based on? rights and obligations
What did lords grant to vassals? Fiefs- land grants
What did vassals grant to knights? land
What did knights grant to serfs? military protection
What did the serfs give to the knights? service, like working on farms and cleaning homes etc.
What did knights give ti Vassals/lords? military protection
What did Vassals give to the King? provided knights in time of war
What was the manor? the lord's estate
What is a tithe? an offering the the village priest the serfs had to make.
Who did the clergy fall under? the pope
Who was the clergy made of of? Bishops and priests
Who was the lower rank of the clergy? prisets
Who supervised them? Bishops
How great was religion during this time period? It was the most important
What were the two of the Churches authorities? political and religious
What was Canon Law? Church law, in manors such as marriage and religious practices
What did the church do to enforce the people were following the Canon Laws? establish courts and try the people
What happened to one who broke the Canon laws? he was wither excommunicated or interdict (cannot receive sacraments or go to church)
What was Manorialism? Manorialism represented the economic portion of feudalism where all aspects of life were centered on the lord’s manor including the village, church, farm land and mill.
What happened at LAY INVESTITURE? a ceremony in witch kings and nobles elected appointed Church officials
