What area did Rome conquer? All of the Mediterranean region including Greece and Macedonia.
How did Rome conquer so much land? The people were loyalty to the republic, they had a strong government, republic was stronger than any 1 leader, Pluralism made army grow rapidly, a well trained army, wars brought army, and Romans loved victorious soldiers.
What kind of empire does Rome become? Parasitic
Who did the government keep calling on to fight? the farmers
Where did the wives move their family? the cities
What happened to the cities and farms? The cities grow and the farms are gone.
Who buys up the land? the patricians
What do the farms begin to produce? cash crops
Who did the patricians use to run the farms? The slaves
What happened to the class system? It became unbalanced.
Who were the Latifundia? Elitist landholders
Did the Latifundia care about the poor? No
What happened to the Latifundia? They got rich and powerful.
What did the military leaders show off? There wealth from conquests.
What did the military do after conquests. They had huge feasts and displays.
What did the military do during parties. Sleep late, eat, and drink a lot.
Who was a good example of typical military leaders? Scipio
What was the government doing to the homeless Romans? They were being siphoned and taxed.
Who was the first Gracchus brother? Tiberious
Who was Tiberious elected? He was elected a tribune.
What did Tiberious want to do? He wanted to break up the Latifundia, give land to war veterans and poor.
What happened to Tiberious? He was assassinated by the senate.
Who was the second Gracchus brother? Gaius
What did Gauis want to do? He wanted to give the homeless power and 50% of grain.
What happened to Gaius? He was assassinated by the senate.
Who were the two leaders during the civil war? Marius and Sulla
Who was Marius backed by? The landless poor.
Who did Marius allow into the military? All males, landed or not.
Who was Marius for 4 years? a consul
What were the good and bad about Marius's plan? Poor people loved him, but bad for army, people joined for money and not republic
What did Sulla proclaimed himself as? a dictator
What did Sulla give the senate power to do? To veto doing any tribune laws
What did Sulla set the stage for? violence and problems
What did the general fight for? power
What kind of family did Julius Caesar come from? Patrician family
Was Julius Caesar ambitious? Yes
What was Julius Caesar's first position? as the 1st Triumvirate
Who was Caesar backed by? the people
Who was Crassus backed by? The rich
Who was Pompey backed by? the army (other than Caesar's troops)
Who was Caesar first elected? a consul
What did Caesar know he had to win? He knew had to win military honors.
What did Caesar conquer? Gaul
How long did Caesar fight in Gaul. 9 years
What did Caesar gain? Huge popularity
What did Caesar's enemies fear? Caesar
What did the senate order Caesar to do and what did he do? They ordered him back to Rome without troops but Caesar came with his troops.
How did Crassus die and what was he doing? He died trying to conquer his allies and he was poured molten gold down his throat.
Who won Caesar and Pompey and where did the loser flee. Pompey lost and he ran to Egypt.
Who was Caesar declared? A dictator for a year.
What were Caesar's reforms? He made more efficient administration, expanded the senate.
Could the Latifundia get a hold of the government while Caesar was a dictator? NO
What did Caesar invent? The Julian calender.
What happened when Caesar was dictator? Resolution of debt crisis, resettlement of veterans aboard, strengthening of the middle class/
What did Republicans fear while Caesar was dictator? They feared the return of monarchy.
Did Caesar have many enemies? Yes
What did the Latifundia want? He wanted the power back.
Who were Brutus and Cassius? They were Caesar's best friends and they led the assassination of Caesar.
How did Caesar die? He was stabbed 23 times on the Ides of March.
