When did Emperor Meiji come rule in Japan, and how old was he? He came to rule in 1867 at about the age of 13.
How did the role of women change during the Meiji period? Women were able to become educated and rise higher in society.
In what year was the Treaty of Kanagawa signed, giving Americans the right to trade with Japan? 1854
What happened to Japan in 1858? More treaties were signed that took away trading rights from the Japanese.
What happened in 1868? (Hint: TWO big things happened) The last shogun resigned, and war broke out between supporters of the shogun and supporters of the emperor.
Who won in the battle between the shogun supporters and the emperor supporers? How? The emperor's supporters won because 30,000 troops blasted the shogun troops, and set their stronghold on fire.
What was the last shogun's name? Tokugawa Yoshinobu
What three major changes occurred as a result of industrialization? More jobs in factories, less hand made items, more people living in cities
How did the role of emperor change when Emperor Meiji came into power? (2 ways) The emperor became involved in decision making, and hired a group of advisors. He also moved his court to Tokyo.
Emperor Meiji changed the name of the city of Edo to... Tokyo
When Emperor Meiji took charge, how did the role of the daimyo change? The daimyo had to turn their land over to the government, and lost power over their people.
How did the role of the samurai change during the Meiji period? The samurai had to get jobs, and were no longer allowed to collect taxes.
How did the role of the merchants change during the Meiji period? Merchats moved up in the feudal system, and bought factories during the industrialization period. They became rich.
How did the education system change during the Meiji period? Children of all classes were educated, and the education program was a blend of traditional and Western ideas.
How did Western technology influence Meiji Japan? The Japanese 'stole' many Western ideas, like the train, steam engine, and steam ship, which made life easier, faster, and gave the people more free time.
How did trade between Japan and the rest of the world change during the Meiji period? Japan began to trade with America, then England, France, the Netherlands, and Russia.
