WORDDEFINITION
monsoon Seasonal winds, that come from the NORTH, from September to March. -They were barriers protecting India.
reincarnation Constant rebirth of one's soul -Reincarnation binded people to the caste system.
caste Level of social class, dependent on one's occupation. -The Caste System is the foundation of Hinduism.
karma Every action and thought will come back to either help you or hurt you when reincarnated. -"What goes around, comes around."
dharma Duties; each caste has one. -Your Karma is dependent on how well you perform your Dharma.
nirvana Union with the universe -Achieve Nirvana by following the Four Noble Truths & the Eightfold Path.
dynastic cycle The cultural cycle that every dynasty goes through. -Military victory, hereditary rulers, internal peace, expansion & power, military & gov't weakens, chaos & rebellion, dynasty collapses, START OVER!
filial piety Respect for your elders. -Very important in Confucianism!
Himalayas Mountain range north-east of India, separating India from central Asia.
Khyber Pass The area between the Hindu-Kush & Himalayan mountain ranges. -This area allowed invaders to enter India.
Aryan Invaders that came through the Khyber Pass into India, and created the CASTE SYSTEM to assert their dominance. -Their beliefs were found in the Vedas & Upanishads.
Siddartha Guatama Founder of Buddhism -Later known as "Buddha"
Mandate of Heaven The divine right to rule given to a ruler by God. -An emperor will loose their 'divine right to rule' when a natural disaster happens, and God will pass the Mandate of Heaven onto a new ruler.
Confucius Philosophy based on the beliefs of Confucius. Focused on FILIAL PIETY! -Five Basic Relationships: Father-Son, Elder Brother-Younger Brother, Husband-Wife, Elder-Junior, RULER-SUBJECT.
Lao Tzu Known as the founder of Taoism/Daoism. -He was apart of the Zhou Dynasty.
Great Silk Road Trade route stretching from central Asia to the Mediterranean Sea, which silk was traded on. -This connected China with cultures as far away as Rome.
