Why did Portugal become the "perfect spot for launching the 'Age of Exploration'"? Because of its geographic location on the Iberian Peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. (Page 200)
What was the main reason Europeans decided to use ships to explore foreign lands? Europeans wanted to find a way to get spices from the East (India and China) because the Silk Road was being controlled by the Ottoman Turks. (Page 200)
What kinds of spices did the Europeans want the most in the 1500's? They wanted pepper, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. (Page 200)
How did Europeans first discover spices from the East? Europeans first encountered these spices when Crusaders brought them back after the Crusades. They had begun using them for food preservation and for seasonings while cooking. (Page 200)
Why did Prince Henry the Navigator send expeditions along the African coast? To find the legendary African leader known as Prester John. He never found him. (Page 202)
Who was "Prester John"? "Prester John" was a mythical African leader. There were rumors that he led his armies against Muslims in northeastern Africa. Rumor also had it that Prester John "had more gold, silver, and precious stones than any man in the world." (Page 202)
Why were "caravels" good for sailing expeditions? Because they were made to ride higher in the water so their hulls wouldn't scrape the bottom of "unfamiliar coasts". They were also lighter, which made them glide through the water more easily. (Pages 202 & 203)
What was one (1) disadvantage of the "caravel" sailing ship? In the beginning, caravels had large, square sails which made them hard to navigate when the winds were against them. Later, shipbuilders started using triangle - shaped sails, which made them easier to maneuver in any wind conditions. (page 203)
What did Prince Henry the Navigator believe about captured African slaves? He believed that they were better off than before because they would be baptized as Christians. (Page 204)
Who was the first explorer to round the southern tip of Africa? Bartholomeu Dias was the first to round the tip of Africa. He did this by accident when his ships got caught in a storm and he had to leave the African coast. After 13 stormy day s at sea,the coast was now on his left - not the right! (Pg. 204)
What is the environment of Belize - the area where some of the Olmec peoples lived - like? (In other words, what is it's climate?) The climate is a Tropical Rainforest area. It is hot, covered with dense vegetation; gets between 50 & 260 inches of rain a year; yearly temperatures between 68 and 93 degrees; & humidity between 77 & 88%. What is the "absolute location" of a place? This term means "The absolute location is the longitude and latitude coordinates of a particular place".
What does the term "relative location" mean? This term means "Relative location is the place where something is in comparison to something else".
What is an example of "absolute location"? An example of this is: "15 degrees North latitude, 20 degrees East longitude".
What is an example of "relative location"? An example of this is: "In Muncie, Burger King is next to the Muncie Mall."
What is the relationship between Jaguars and the Olmec people? The Olmecs lived "close to nature", so the animals in the area where they lived were important. The "were-jaguar" was part of their mythology!
What are three things you have to have before you can say you have a "civilization" in an area? You must have: 1.) Surplus of Food, 2.) Built up Cities, and; 3.) A Division of Labor.
What is an "astrolabe"? This instrument was used by sailors at sea for navigation. It used the stars to determine absolute location of the ship at sea.
What is one way to remember the reasons Europeans began exploring? Remember the phrase "God, Gold, & Guns". Missionaries wanted to spread their religious beliefs, countries wanted more gold, and they wanted to use guns to conquer new lands.

How did scientists locate living relatives of the Incan mummies? Used DNA traces to link mummies and relatives.
