What were the three Gs that motivated the European Explorers in the 15th & 16th centuries? Gold (Economics), God (Religion), and Glory (Fame/Power)
Why did the population in the Americas decline from 1492 to 1608? The Europeans brought diseases such as smallpox to which the natives had no immunity; used natives as slaves and worked them to death
What was the exchange of plants, animals, diseases between the old world (Europe) and the new world (Amnericas) called? The Columbian Exchange (Columbian comes from Columbus whose voyage in 1492 let Europeans know the Americas were out there)
What was the Middle Passage? The trans-Atlantic trade of slaves from Africa to the New World. Slaves were stacked in crowed ships in poor conditions and shipped to the New World.
Who was Marco Polo? He traveled to China as a young boy and spent 20 years there. He gave Europe its first real knowledge of the Far East.
Who was Francis Xavier? He was a priest who worked to spread Christianity in Asia.
Who was Hernando Cortes? He was a Spanish explorer (conquistor) who conquered the mighty Aztec empire in Mexico gaining new land and riches for
Who was Francisco Pizzaro? He conquered the Incan Empire in South America gaining new land for Spain and riches for himself.
Who was Bartolomeu Diaz? He explored for the Kinbg of Portugal; paved the way for trade with Asia by sailing along the African coastline.
Who was Vasco Nunez de Balboa? He was the first explorer to discover the Pacific Ocean and his settlements helped bring more Spaniards to the New World.
What is ethnocentrism? The belief that your culture is superior to other cultures.
What is mercantilism? Draw the diagram. The economic system in which the mother country gets raw materials from the colony and sells manufactured goods back to the colony.
Why did the African Kingdoms prosper (do well)? They developed an extensive trade in gold, salt, and ivory.
What was Timbuktu? Major trade city in Africa; strong empahsis on learning and books
What is the Mandate of Heaven? Chinese belief that the leader got power to lead from their God
What are some examples of monumental architecture? Taj Mahal in India, The Great Wall of China, Temples of the Aztecs & Incans in the Americas
Why is Spanish spoken in Latin America and South America today? Cultural diffusion--the Spanish explored, conquered, and settled in those areas and took their language with them.
Why are the majority people of North and South America followers of Christianity today? Cultural diffusion--the explorers were Christian and spread (sometimes even forced) their religions to new places
Who were the two major European countries involved in exploration? Spain and Portugal
What are the seven characteristics of civilzation? Cities, Monumental architecture, Government, Social Classes, Trade, Writing Systems, Large-scale agriculture
What was the code of Bushido? Japanese values of discipline, loyalty, obedience, honor and respect for elders/authority
In Japanese culture today, in an office, who sits the farest from the door? The most important person
How did both the Chinese and the Japanese view outsiders in the 1400's & 1500's? Negatively; believed them to be barbarians and not worth their attention.
Who was Zheng He? Chinese Explorer
Which characteristic of civilization is the caste system of India an example of? Social Class
Before the Columbian Exchange, potatoes, peanuts, corn, and chocolate were found only in the Americas (New World)
How did horses, cattle, coffee, and smallpox get to the New World? Exploers brought them from the Old World (Europe & Africa)
What was Triangle Trade? Trade between Europe (manufactored goods), Africa(slaves), and the Americas(raw materials).
What were the impacts or effects of exploration? 1. Diseases such as smallpox, measles, & malaria killed the natives who had no immunity 2. European Empires 3. Mercantilism 4. Technology of guns/weapons defeated natives 5.Religion--Christianity spread; even forced on natives
What made European exploration possible? New advances in technology made long sea travel possible.
What did the Edit of 1635 do in Japan? Kicked all outsiders out of Japan or they would face death, no Japnese ships would go out, no trade with outsiders. The Japanese believed that the Japanese culture was superior(ethnocentism)
Why did the Chinese stop their voyages in 1471? Believed that their Chinese culture was superior and it would be hurt by outsiders' culture (ethnocentrism)
What was the major city in the Aztec empire? Tenochititlan
What were missionaries? People who worked to spread Christianity to the newly explored areas in the Americas, Asia, and Africa.
Why were slaves from Africa needed in the New World? To do the work on the large planations(Farms) because most of the natives died of diseases.
What belief did the Aztecs have that made the Spanish believe they were barbarians? Human Sacrifice to the Sun God so the sun would rise each day
