36-40. When the European countries drew borders around their colonies, they divided friendly African tribes and locked together tribes who were fighting wars with each other. (p.120-121) The Berlin Conference was supposed to prevent war. Why did it cause years of unrest in Africa?
41-45. They paid more taxes, were forced to live in certain areas of Russia, and weren't allowed to move wherever they wanted. Not many Russian Jewish children were allowed to go to school, and it was difficult for those who did. (p.149) Why was life harder for Jews in Russia than other poor Russians?
46-50. They signed treaties because none of these countries wanted any of the others to gain any more power in Africa. All three of these countries would try to make sure that the others didn't try to invade Ethiopia. (p.155) Why did Italy, Great Britain, and France all sign treaties recognizing Ethiopia's independence?
51-55. The sultans who ruled over the Ottoman Turks had spent so much money that they had to borrow money from other countries. The people were ignoring the sultan doing what they pleased. (p.97) Why was the Ottoman Empire known as "The Sick Man of Europe"?
