Who was the first caliph? Abu-Bakr
What does the title caliph mean? successor
What were Muslim armies like? well disciplined and expertly commanded
What was one thing the Qur'an did not allow? forced conversion to the religion
What were the Muslims like towards conquered peoples? they were tolerant and let them believe anything they wanted.
What were Christians and Jews who lived under Muslim law allowed to do? be officials, scholars and bureaucrats
What were Christians and Jews no allowed to do under Muslim law? spred their religion
Who were the Umayyads? A family who came to power after the assassination of the last caliph
What did the Umayyads do? they moved the Muslim capitol to Damascus
By moving the capitol to Damascus, it cause the Muslims to... break apart into two different groups
What group believed the caliph had to be a descendent from Muhammad and still rejected the Umayyads? Shi'a
What does Shi'a mean? party
The group that did not outwardly resist the Umayyads were called... Sunni
What does Sunni mean? followers of Muhammad's example
What group desired a life of poverty and devotion to a spiritual path? the Sufi
What did the powerful group call the Abbasids do? they took control over the Muslim Empire
What did the Abbasids do? made a state for the Muslims to live
What was the state called that the Abbasids built for the Muslims? al-Andalus
