What is ahimsa? SS 7-3 This words is from the religion of Jainism which means "nonviolence" in Jains.
What is the main belief of the Jainism religion? SS 7-3 Jains believe that every living thing has a soul and should not be hurt.
What is Buddhism? SS 7-3 A religion founded in India in the 500s BC that spread throughout Asia, based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama.
Who is Siddhartha Gautama? SS 7-3 The Indian prince who founded Buddhism (aka. Buddha). He was a prince who gave up his wealth and life position to understand the meaning of life. When he began to teach what he learned he was call the Buddha = enlightened one.
What is nirvana? SS 7-3 Buddhist belief that is marked by the end of suffering. The path taught by the Buddha was intended to lead to nirvana. Reaching nirvana broke the cycle of reincarnation that Buddhists and Hidus believed in.
What is dharma? SS 7-3 The collected teaching of the Buddha. The true nature of things. Symbol = wheel. The teachings of the Buddha that was gathered by his followers after his death.
Who is Asoka? SS 7-3 The Buddhist king who began his rule in 269 BC. The greatest king of the Maurya Empire who gave up warfare and ruled by Buddhist teachings. He was Chandragupta's grandson.
What are the Four Nobel Truths? SS 7-3 Buddha's term for his four insights into reality.
What are two great empires of ancient India? SS 7-3 Maurya and Gupta empires
Who was Chandra Gupta II? SS 7-3 The Gupta ruler whose reign produced a golden age (time of great accomplishment) in India. He was Chandra Gupta's grandson. He was the greatest ruler of the family. Indian art flourished in his time.
Who was Kalidasa and what did he produce? SS 7-3 During the Golden Age of the Gupta Empire, Kalidasa became one of India's greatest writers of Sanskrit POEMS and PLAYS.
The Buddha's Eightfold Path stressed right behavior in eight areas, what are they? opinions, desires, speech, actions, job, effort, concentration, and meditation.
Who was Chandragupta Maurya? SS 7-3 King of Magadha, a northeastern Aryan kingdom that began to gain strength around 550 BC. He conquered much territory and his Maurya Empire soon covered much of the subcontinent.
How did Chandragupta control his empire? SS 7-3 he used spies to learn what people did and an army of soldiers to keep order. Many officials ran the government. He paid them by taxing land and crops heavily.
What did Asoka's reign produce? SS 7-3 Tried to rule peacefully by law. His policies (be truthful and kind) were carved on rocks and pillars. Buddhism spread via missionaries. Allowed others to worship freely. Implremented improvements to help traders and officials.
How did the the popularity of Buddhism affect Hinduism and vise versa? SS 7-3 There were fewer people were worshiping Hindu dieties. Then Hindu thought changed, Poems written in common languages instead of Sanskrit renewed love for Hindu deities, Buddhism interest declined.
Who were the Guptas? SS 7-3 The Maurya Empire collapsed shortly after Asoka died because of poor rule and invasions. 500 years of conflict follwed until the Gupta family took control. Chandra Gupta I took over in AD 320.
What is Sanskrit? SS 7-3 The classical language of Hinduism, oldest and the most systematic language in the world.
What are some of the Math, Science and Metallurgy Indians scholars invented? SS 7-3 The numeral & decimal systems we use today, Zero, the length of a year, est. value of Pi (calc. length of a circle's boundary). Ayurvedic medicine. Largest iron pillars for 1000 years.
