what is the fertile crescent? what is it? a large arc of rich, or fertile, farmland that extends from the persian gulf to the Meditterranean sea
what is mesopotamia? (literally) what does it refer to and who named it? it is "the land between 2 rivers" it refers to the tigris and euphrates river, the greeks named it
what is fertile soil? rivers=flood=silt=fertile
what is silt and what does it have to do with flooding? mixture of rich soil and tiny rocks. Flooding overflows and the nutrience and sediment mix with the fertile soil.
know the sequence of events leading up to the first independent sumerian city states? rivers=hunter gathers settle=farm settlements=civilization fertile crescent
what is division labor? the type of arrangement in which each worker specializes in a particular jod or task
know about the ancient irrigation systems? discuss and be ab;e to identify canals, rivers, levees,dams. discuss the importance of keeping the irrigation canals clean and functioning. storage basins=hold water supplies canals=human= made waterways built up banks=no flooding (dams)
what is cuneiform? how was it used? how did it start out? it is the worlds first system of writing, styluses=clay tablets=business records=keep track of trade
what is a scribe? list details of the job. writer, keep track of trading, government officials temples hire them
what is the plow? 1) pulled by oxen 2) broke through hard clay 3)prepare for planting 4) increase farm population 5) used in battle
what is the sun dial? (used by babylonians and chaldeans) tell time sun
what is the wheel? (sumerians) potters wheel vehicles carts wagons
siege warfare? (assyrians) keep hitting over and over and over again until that one thing or object falls
battering rams? used for battering (knocking down) walls to get through empires/slash city states
what are ziggurats? where located? why tall? pyramid shaped tower used to please the gods and pray located in the middle of the temple "home of god" it is tall because they believed it was the door between heaven and earth
which ruler created the hanging gardens of babylon? what were they? Nebuchadnezzar literally hanging gardens " beautiful"
what is the difference between polytheism and monotheism? P= believe in one god M= many gods
what is an empire? how is it different from a city state? land with territories people under single rule monotheism city plus country side government army
