Royal Road SS 4-3 road used to relay government messages - used by Darius. The road was 1,775 miles long. The east end was Susa, the west end was in Sardis on the Anatolian Penninsula.
What was the land of the Persians like? SS 4-3 Mountain ranges (Zagros, the Caucasus, and the Hindu Kush. Most people lived at the edge of a high plateau in the middle of the region or in the mountain valleys.
Where was Persia located? SS 4-3 Between Mesopotamia and India. It was a bridge between easter and western Asia
How did Cyrus control the Persian Empire? SS 4-3 He used a policy of toleration.
How did Persia govern it's lands better? SS 4-3 It divided it's land into smaller units.
What was the land east of the Fertile Crescent that bridged east and west Asia? SS 4-3 Media (Medes)
What was found in the mountain valleys of Persia? SS 4-3 Iron, copper, and semiprecious gems.
How did the presence of nomadic tribes affect Persia? SS 4-3 Nomads occupied the land of Medes. They came from the plains of Central Asia. The result of the invasion was mixing of nomadic customs.
When did the Persian's enter the land of the Medes? SS 4-3 About 1000 BC, they entered the region. They created many tiny kingdoms, thrived on trade in horses and minerals with eastern and western Asia. These kingdoms grew in power and began to threaten the Medes' control of the land.
What was the rule of Cyrus like? SS 4-3 He built a stable empire. He led swift deadly attacks to gain control of the region. He ruled through respecet and toleration. He did require all to pay tribute.
How did Darius control the land? SS 4-3 He divided the empire into 20 provinces. Each had its own; local government, satraps, appointed military commanders for each satrap, had spies - 'king's eyes and ears'
Who was Cyrus? SS 4-3 Brilliant, powerful king who founded the Persian Empire
Who was Darius? SS 4-3 (Darius 1) Powerful ruler who expanded the Persian Empire after the death of Cyrus and divided the empire into (20) provinces.
What are minted coins? SS 4-3 Term for coins issued by the government that are official money. Darius got this idea from Hammurabi's model, from teh Lydians, a conquered people.
Who is Xerxes? SS 4-3 Darius' son who would have to deal with Egypt after Darius' death in 486 BC
Lesson Summary SS 4-3 Tiny Persian kingdoms thrived due to trade. Cyrus the Great ruled the Persian Empire with a policy of toleration. Darius formed provinces and appointed satraps to improve governments.
