Mesopotamia's First Civilizations

What is the Fertile Crescent? Where is it? The Fertile Crescent is an area of rich farmland where the first civilizations began. It is located in the Middle East between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
What is Mesopotamia? What does this refer to and who named it Mesopotamia? Mesopotamia is the "Land Between Two Rivers"(Tigris and Euphrates). The Greeks named Mesopotamia.
Why is this area fertile? It is Fertile because the land is between two rivers which occasionally flood and cause the land to be fertile.
What is silt and what does it have to do with the flooding? Silt is a mixture of fertile soil and tiny rocks that is made from flooding. Silt makes land ideal for farming.
What is division of labor? Division of labor is the division of society by rank or class.
What is cuneiform? How was it used? how did it start out? Cuneiform is the world's first writing system(on clay tablet with stylus). Early writing started out as pictographs or picture symbols but in cuneiform symbols were used, and combining symbols would make a more complex word.
What is a scribe? -Hired to keep track of items people traded. -Kept records. -Way to move up in social class.
PLOW (Sumerians) -made fertile soil.
SUN-DIAL (New Babylonians or Chaldeans) -used for astronomy
WHEEL (Sumerians) -used for rolling items
SIEGE WARFARE (Assyrians) -to kill enemies
BATTERING-RAMS (Assyrians) -to open doors
MOVEABLE TOWERS (Assyrians) -to move over walls
HANGING GARDEN OF BABYLON (New Babylonians or Chaldeans) -to look beautiful and show power
CHARIOT (Hittites) -to move quickly in battle
What did the Sumerians contribute to Mathematics? They made a number system based on 60.
What are Ziggurats? Where were they located (within city-states)? Why were they tall? A ziggurat is a pyramid shaped templer tower. They were located in the middle of city-states. They were tall because they were impportant.
Which ruler created the "Hanging Gardens of Babylon?" What were they? Nebuchadnezzar, it was a gorgeous place with trees and flowers everywhere.
What is the difference between polytheism and monotheism? Polytheism believes in many gods but monotheism believes in only one god.
What is an empire? How is it different from a city-state? An empire is land with different territories and people under a single rule. A city-state is a bunch of cities and its country sides under different rule.
Which empire was located on the banks of the Euphrates River, was around during 2330-2100 B.C.E., had a powerful Army, its significant leader was Sargon, and created a language? Akkadians
Which empire was located on the banks of the Euphrates River, was around during 1800-1500 B.C.E., was a trade center, and its significant leader was Hammurabi who created 282 Laws? Babylonians
Which empire was famous for their chariots and iron working and conquered Babylon in 1595 B.C.E.? Hittites
Which empire was in Nineveh (Northern Mesopotamia), known for cruelty, battering rams, & chariots, siege warfare, had a strong military with strategies for war, and was around during 1200-900 B.C.E.? Assyrians
Which empire was located in Syria, known for ruthless military, enslaved Hebrews, was around during 605-562 B.C.E., its significant leader was Nebuchadnezzar who ruled 75 years and created the hanging gardens? Babylonian II Chaldeans Neo-Babylonians

Why ws the purple dye made by the Phoenicians so expensive(and used as a symbol of wealth and importance by monarchs)? It took 10,000 mollusks to create one gram of purple dye!!
What was the Code of Hammurabi? Who created it? How many laws were there? Where were they written? What is the significance of these laws to society? Code of Hammurabi was a set of 282 Laws created by Hammurabi. They were written on steles and placed inside temples. They led to many laws in modern society.
Why is the Sumerian social classes symbolically shaped like a triangle? It is shaped like a triangle because the top of the triangle represents the social hierarchy which is rare (less people) and the bottom of the triangle represents the hierarchy which is much more common (more people).
