Minoans & Mycenaens

Minoans an early civilization from Crete around 2800 B.C. People were farmers and then became traders
Crete an island in the Mediteranean near Greece

Theseus young Greek prince brought to Knossos to be sacrificed to the Minotaur. He fought & killed the the Minotaur with a magic sword. with that, the Minoan civilization died
Minotaur a huge monster-half man/half bull. Kept by king in the labyrinth of palace
bull leaping sporting event of Minoan people similar to bull-fighting. also believed to be a religious ceremony
labyrinth a network of winding paths within the rooms and hallways of the palace-meant as a form of protection for the king
parchment animal skin stretched thin used to cover doorways & windows
shrines sacred places built to worship and honor the many gods and goddesses
Minoans way of life they were carpenters, farmers and then traded with their extra supplies
Minoan civilization spent much time on the sea, used the sea for trading. No walled cities, they used the navy & sea as their protection
frescos water color paintings on the damp plaster on the inside walls of homes, shrines and palaces
Mycenaeans people that came to Greece from Russia in 1400 B.C. and took control of the Mediterranean area. didn't build cities, they built fortresses on hilltops
Troy major trading city in Asia Minor attacked by Mycenaeans in a long, 10-year war over a woman (Helen of Troy)
Homer a blind Greek poet who composed "The Iliad" & "The Odyssey" two poems about the attack on Troy
Dorians these people attacked Mycenaeans and drove them out of Greece.
Ionia Settlements where Mycenaeans fled to after Dorians attacked. located on Aegean islands and western shores of Asia Minor
Hellenes new civilizations that formed after the Dark Ages began calling themselves by this name, also know as Greeks
megaron a square room in the palace with a fireplace located in center. The king held meetings there and had entertainment there
tenants people who lived & worked on someone else's land. They paid rent, or in goods, to stay there.
civil wars wars between opposing groups of citizens. (like the north & south in US Civil War)
What did Mycenaeans learn from Minoans? most importantly, a script writing, navigation & shipbuilding skills.
Dark Ages people of the Aegean area lost their skills and had to create a new civilization
