How did Chinggis Khan reunite the Mongols? Stressed loyalty to the khagan; got rid of quarrels; organized armies into tumens
How did the Mongolian army improve? Captured artisans and scholars and had them create technology
What territories did Chinggis Khan capture? Xi Xia kingdom, Qin dynasty, Kara Khitai Empire, Khwarazm Empire; from eastern Persia to North China Sea
How was Chinggis Khan as a ruler? Capital at Karakorum; had scholars improve army techniques; bureaucracy of both Muslims and Chinese
How was Ogedei like? Not exceptional military leader, but very crafty; elected great khan after Chinggis died
Describe the Mongol Empire after Chinggis Khan's death. Divided into four khanates; Golden Horde
Why did Russia lose to the Mongols? It was divided and separated between princes; Mongols were still powerful
How was Russia like after the defeat? Peasantry had to give up crops and labor; Moscow benefited a lot and eventually united with the rest of Russia to defeat the Mongols
Why were Christians slow to realize the threat of Mongols? They thought it was Prester John; the new threat conquered Muslims
What territories did Batu capture? Russia for a moment; Hungarian Empire; a fair amount of Europe
What territories did Hulegu capture? Muslim empires around Mesopotamia and North Africa; Byzantium to Oxus River
What territories did Kubilai Khan capture? Most of China
How did Kubilai prevent mixing between Mongols and Chinese? Forbade Chinese to learn Mongol script; forbade intermarrying; only nomadic women were for imperial harem
How did Chinggis Khan like Chinese culture? Capital at present day Beijing; introduced Chinese culture and music
Describe the rights of women during Yuan rule. Had many rights; didn't practice footbinding
Describe the bureaucratic structure during Yuan rule. Mongols were first; Muslims and central Asian allies were below; northern Chinese; ethnic Chinese
Describe the social structure during Yuan rule. Artisans and merchants' social class rose; peasants had some more rights; scholar gentry were treated more harshly
Describe the fall of the Yuan dynasty. Revolts and hostility rose; Kubilai was defeated by Japanese and vVietnamese; bad successors
Describe Timur-i Lang. Highly cultured; military conquests were atrocious and he was brutal
