Age of Imperialism

Imperialism in Asia and Africa

QuestionAnswer
What was one of the reasons for imperialism? 1. Countries were becoming more industrialized and they needed supplies like rubber, oil, and minerals for their new factries.
What was the second reason for imperialism? African and Asian products like sugar, bananas, rice, and coffee were in high demand and European countries wanted to be able to control the supply of the products and to make money.
What was the third reason for imperialism? Nationalism is a form of national pride that sometimes made other countries feel superior to other countries so they believed that if they took control of other countries it would show their superiority.
What was Britain's jewel in the crown? India b/c it supplied them with tea, coffee, cotton, and other farm products. They forced the Indians to buy their textiles. They did bring some good though, they built railroads, roads, telegraph and telephone lines and schools and colleges.
What were the Dutch East Indies and their role to the Dutch? They are modern-day Indonesia. The islands were France's jewel b/c they owned large plantations there that grew products for export. The Indonesians did not share in the wealth though.
What was Indochina? Indochina was modern-day Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. It played the same role to the French as the Dutch East Indies did to the Dutch. The French built roads, railroads, communication systems, schools, and hospitals.
What were spheres of influence and how did they work? China had grown much weaker through the 1800s and Europeans used that weakness by seizing regions called *spheres of influence*. Each European country had economic privileges and the right to control, factories, mines, and railways.
Did Europeans control the government in Beijing? No, they did not control the main government, only their sphere of influence. They forbade Chinese people to go to european parts of the city without permission and they were pretty much treated with horrible unfairness.
Did the Asians like the Europeans in their countries? No they hated it. They even rebelled a few times. A group in CHina called the *Boxers* revolted. (IT didn't work.) A group of Indian soldiers known as sepoys staged a rebellion against Britain in 1857. That one didnt work either.
What was the scramble for Africa? The scramble for Africa was when European powers rushed to make colonies in Africa. The Euro's often put people of different cultures together who spoke different languages..
What did the Euro's do to the Africans? They made the Africans grow cash crops, work in mines, on rubber plantations, or build roads. The Africans were also taxed heavily. Some countries did not gain independence until recently.
