What was the religious situation in Japan like? Buddhism dominated; peasants tended to believe the Pure Land sect while bushi/higher up people believed in Chan/Zen Buddhism
How did the influence of China diminish with the rise of warrior elites? Scholar gentry and bureaucracy didn't emerge; Buddhism became unique; visits to China were discontinued
Describe the Minamoto clan. They were reliant on their military; established military government; started feudal age
What happened with the Ashikaga conflict? Takuaji overthrew the Kamakura regime of Minamoto and established a new shogunate; emperor didn't support this, so he fled; there was much conflict and strife; full scale civil war developed

How was Sinification in Vietnam like? Education systems became similar; Chinese schools and learning; CSEs; agriculture; political and military styles; extended family model
How did Vietnam win independence from China? Peasants called for revolts; Vietnamese women didn't want Confucianism
Describe the political system of Vietnam. A small scale bureaucracy was in place; CSEs were still there; scholar gentry had less power because lords listened to peasants for local/common interests; Buddhists also had power
What was the Vietnamese expansion like? Vietnamese used powerful military to conquer neighbors; moved south and expanded
What were the effects of Vietnamese expansion South and North Vietnam developed differences; Nguyen (South) vs Trinh (north) clashed
