empire Brings together many different peoples and land under the control of one ruler
emperor The person who rules (an empire). Sargon of Akkad (Akkadian Empire), creator 1st empire in world history.
Fertile Crescent land that stretched in a curve fromt he mediterranean Sea through mesopotamia to the Persian Gulf. It had rich soil & water that made the area good for farming.
Hammurabi A powerful Amorite king. Ruled the Babylonian Empire. Used govenors to help him control land.
code of law A set of written rules for people to obey. Originally written in cuneiform. Displayed on huge pillars near a temple.
justice Fair treatment of people. The goal of the code of law was to bring justice to the people.
Who controlled Mesopotamia? Sargon of Akkad controlled Northern & Southern Mesopotamia about 2350 BC
One of the most importan idea's spread by the Akkadian Empire? Akkadian system of writting. Sargon's conquests helped spread Akkadian ideas and ways of life.
Why are empires important? Empires are important because they change the way people live. They may bring peace. They encourage trade (increase goods available). Include people from several cultures often: ideas, technology & customs of the different people may be shared by all.
What empires ruled in the Fertile Crescent? for approx. 200 years - Empire of Akkad - Sakkon. Babylonian Empire - Amorite - Ammurabi 1792-1750 BC,
Lesson Summary Sargon of Akkad build an empire of many different people under one rule/one govt. Hammurabi expanded the Babylonian Empire - wise govt. hammurabi create a single code of law that set up well defined rules and treatment for all
Purpose of Hammuabi's code of law establish the idea that the government should provide protection and justice for all the people
