What is the caste system? A set of rigid social categories that determined a person's occupation, economic potential, and position in society.
What is karma?
What is reincarnation? Belief that the individual soul is reborn after death.
What is the dharma? Divine law; requires that all people must do their duty
What are the levels of the caste system? Brahman (priestly), Kshatriya (warriors), Vaisyas (commoners - merchants), Sudras (peasants), Untouchables
What is the Brahman? Hindu belief: a form of ultimate reality or God
What two religions originated in India? Hinduism and Buddhism
What is the primary feature of India's culture? Monsoons
What was the name of the first Indian Civilization? Indus River Valley Civilization
Brick architecture, courtyards, indoor plumbing, priest-kings & city states, games & art handicrafts are accomplishments of what civilization? Indus River Valley
Who were the Aryans? A group of Indo-European nomadic peoples who conquered the Harrapans and created a new Indian culture.
What is the Sanscrit? First writing system of the Arians, developed around 1000 b.c.
Who was Alexander the Great? A Macedonian king who conquered Persia, in turn giving rise to the first dynasty to control much of India.
Who was the founder of the Mauryan dynasty? Chandragupta Maurya. He was afraid of assassination, having his food tested before every meal and slept in a different bed every night.
Who was Asoka? The grandson of Chandragupta; considered to be the greatest ruler in the history of India.
What religion did Asoka convert to, using its principles to guide his rule? Buddhism
What was the Silk Road? A route between the Roman Empire and China, so called because silk was China's most valuable product
During what empire was the Golden Age of India? Gupta Empire
