Social Studies enlightenment vocabulary, enlightened thinkers

| Free Market | A market in which government involvement is limited |
| Salon | Informal social gatherings at which people may exchange ideas |
| Divine Rights | Rights given to a monarch by God |
| Reformation | Transformation or change |
| Laissez Faire | Policy allowing busines to operate with little or no government interference |
| Absolutism | Ruler has complete authority over the government and the lives of the people he or she governs |
| Enlightenment | A period of advancements and change |
| Scientific Revolution | Advancements and changes in scientific belief |
| Social Contract | Agreement by which people give up their freedom to a powerful government in order to avoid chaos |
| Enlightened Despots | Absolute ruler who uses power to bring about political and social change |
| Natural Law | Rule or law that governs human nature |
| State of Nature | A time before organized society |
| Enlightened Thinkers | Free thinkers during the Enlightenment |
| Natural Rights | Rights that we are born with |
| Mary Wollstonecraft | Believed in women's rights and equal education |
| Thomas Hobbes | -Saw man as naturally selfish and immoral, and that it was because of the fear of death that the indivial will give away his rights to a king -King's power comes from the people; people have the right to overthrow him |

| Rousseau | Believed that people are naturally good and are corrupted by society; he had faith in the general will |
