Ligaments of face, skull & vertebrae
Ligament | Location | Function |
---|---|---|
Anterior longitudinal | Skull to sacrum, thickens (external) | Stabilizes vertebral column |
Posterior longitudinal | Inner vertebral column (internal) | Prevents hyperextension, keeps vertebrae in line, protects spinal cord |
Ligamentum flava | Under (between) spinous processes (external) | Connects lamina (arches) |
Supraspinal | Tips of spinous processes (external) | Stability, proper alignment |
Ligamentum nuchae | Sheet covering posterior side of spinal column (cervical) (external) | Holds head on |
Interspinal | One vertebrae to the next, spines of vertebrae (external) | Stability, proper alignment |
Alar | Crosses above atlas at dens (internal) | Holds dens to skull (strongest in skull) |
Transverse (cruciate) | Side to side of atlas, superior to dens (internal) | Holds dens in place, supports Alar ligament (strongest in skull) |
Intervertebral Disc | Between vertebrae | Absorbs shock, reduces friction |
Tectorial membrane | Vertebral canal (turns into posterior longitudinal) (internal) | Lines vertebral column |
