Limited and Unlimited Goverment Vocabulary Terms Study Guide

Monarchies Governments led by kings and queens. Monarch is the name given to rulers of monarchy.
Absolutism The system of government that places absolute total power in the hands of the ruler and his advertisers.
Divine Right The idea that rulers receive their power directly from God and are responsible only to God and not other people.
Absolute Monarch A monarch with unlimited power. They argue that an absolute monarch would unify a nation and make it strong.
Limited Monarchy A system in which power is restricted by the people. A limited government is the basis of America.
Magna Carta Great Charter established the idea limited the power of the king. It also gone certain rights to the people such as Trial of Jury.
Parliament King Edward I called a meeting of people to help make laws, this group was called parliament. They were representatives who spoke for the people. Parliament was divided into two houses. The House of Lords and the House of Commons.
Puritan People who wanted to purify the church of England.
Petition of Rights A petition that banned the king from doing three things. 1 Passing taxes without consent of Parliament. 2 Quarter troops in private homes. 3 Imprisoning a person without charges.
Commonwealth State ruled by elective representatives.
Martial Law Ruled by the military.
Restoration When monarchy came back to the throne of England.
Glorious Revolution A bloodless revolution when Mary daughter of James her husband took the throne of England.
English Bill of Rights A bill that limits the monarchy and states the right of the Parliament and the people. The king and queen ruled limited monarchies.
Constitutional Monarchy A monarchy ruled by an elected assembly and limited by the law.
Unlimited Governments When monarchs exercise absolute and total control.
Estates-Germinal The French Assembly
Edict of Nartes This Edict protected the right of French protestants.
Czar Name for the rulers of Russia. Russian word meaning Caesar.
