General Benefits of Russian Sports Massage. Increases: Circulation, Blood and Lymph Flow, Heart and Respiration rate, Overall Metabolism, Range of Motion, Speed of Waste removal, Healing/recovery. Decreases: Muscle Fatigue and Tension, Edema, Chronic Pain, Abnormal Deposits
Who is considered the Father of Russian Sports Massage? Zabludovsky, a Russian Physician who earned a PhD for writing his thesis. He moved to Germany after being scrutinized.
The Research Institute of Physical Education. 1918 - Opened in Russia -- 1925 - Massage becomes manditory in curricula -- 1944 Develops Specific Protocols and strokes that differ from Swedish.
General Contraindications For RSM Open wounds, infection, fever, bleeding, blood clots (thrombosis), acute inflammation, skin damage/disease, Extreme Arthritis, First trimester in pregnancy, Extreme irritability, excitability, fatigue, or mental fatigue.q
Name the groups of strokes in the correct order. Effleurage, Wringing, Petrissage, Friction, Vibration, Percussion, Passive Movements.
Name the general hand positions used in the various strokes. Crescent, 4-Fingertip, Rake, Thumb, Open Fist, Palmar, Ulnar
RSM affects Central Nervous System by: Stimulative --> Increasing CNS activity. (Petrissage, Wringing, Percussion) Sedative --> Decreasing CNS activity. (Effleurage, Friction, Vibration)
How can strokes be altered to convert the effect on CNS? Consistant rhythm, speed, and pressure = Sedative. Varying rhythm, speed, and pressure = Stimulative.
Which 2 groups of strokes cannot be changed from stimulative to sedative? Petrissage and Wringing.
How does RSM affect the skin? Incresed circulation, (Friction, Effleurage, Percussion). Can also provide mild exfoliation allowing for easier waste removal.
How does RSM affect the muscle tissues? Increase in endurance, size, tone, strength and circulation, decrease in edema, fatigue and tension. (Petrissage, Wringing, Vibration, Percussion, and Passive Movement.)
How does RSM affect the general connective tissues, (joints, tendons, ligaments)? Warms up tissues for increased activity, Decreased tension, Increased Range of Motion, brings blood to avascular areas. (Friction, Passive Movement.)
What is the total time for a general full body RSM on someone who is less than or equal to 130 pounds? 40 Minutes
What is the total time for a general full body RSM on someone who is 131-175 pounds? 50 Minutes
What is the total time for a general full body RSM on someone who is 176-220 pounds? 60 Minutes
What is the total time for a general full body RSM on someone who is more than or equal to 221 pounds? 60 - 90 minutes
