Election of 1864. L up for reelection in middle of the war. He resigned to the fact that he couldn't win. Northerners just wanted to end the war.

Wade davis bill? L. extended these rights to slaves, L says its too muc to fast. bill put up by congress. Bill designed to help RR get what they want and L vetoes it!

why does johnson hate the south? bc he wasn't a slave owner and the slave owners were the ones who had all the power. Cannot except that balcks and whiite are equal. believes they should have freedom, just not the dam eknd as whites.
Johnson's famous quote? "this country is for white men, and by god, as long as i am president, it shall be a government for white men."
What appeared to be all the answers in J presidency? he was a democratic and the only one not to secede so he could help the south! but he hated the south. THey wanted him to sign the wadedavis bill.

why were northerners mad that J was letting ex-c's back into congress? they don't know how loyal these ppl are! they just rebelled against US and now he's senator??

mid term elections... what is the north trying to tell president? outcome of elections? That they don't agree with whats going down. Republicans has a 2/3 majority vote in EACH HOUSE! 2/3 majority has power to overturn veto!!!!

Panic of 1873. what goes down? Shows something shifting in the economy! 14% unemployed. 1st panic in us history not about cotton prices. Caused by Railroad speculation Bust.
what cause the panic of '73? Railroad Speculation Bust (nobody bought stick so it busted)
Railroad before civil war, and after? why? B= 30K miles in 1861; A=50K miles in 1873
Election of 1876. who? How many states are redeemed byt then? Samuel Tilden vs Rutherford Hayes. 8 states
samuel tilden known for? democrats. Tweed ring (worst cause of corruption); he busted the ring and fought against it.
rutherford hayes republican; evoke emotion; everyone hating Reps bc theyre in charge of reconstruction and corruption; "bloody shirt" saying democrats started warw so don't vote for them.
Deadlock. what goes down? Tilden is one electoral vote away for winning. T= 184 electoral votes Hayes = 166 electoral votes needs 19 more to win
What happens with the 3 states voting in the deadlock of hayes and tilden? Conflicting votes in la, sc, and fla = 19 votes (last 3 states under reconstruction) Democrats Let republicans have votes on one condition. END RECONSTRUCTION IN STATES; pull the soldiers out.
Compromise of 1877 S democrats and hayes cut a deal. Hayes gets the votes bc they want reps in office and so they'll end it for that reason Hayes pull soldiers out of La, SC, FLA.
Reconstruction ended. name for south? "solid south" until 1972. Be very rare that the south will have a republican voted from south until 1972
