The Scientific Revolution A time during the 16th and 17th centuries where new knowledge was found in chemistry, astronomy, physics, medicine and biology.
Nicolas Copernicus He was an astronomer and mathematician who lived in Poland Discovered that the sun was the center of the galaxy He began a revolution in astronomy with this discovery that went against current belief of that time
William Harvey He was an English Physician He was the first person to figure out that the heart was a muscle that pumped blood throughout the body. He basically discovered how the circulatory system worked
Galileo He was an Italian Physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher He improved on the telescope He is called “the father of modern science” He also discovered the moons of Jupiter and the phases of Venus
Johannes Kepler He was a German Mathematician, astronomer, astrologer He discovered the laws of planetary motion His works helped Isaac Newton to discover the theory of universal gravitation He invented the refracting telescope
Sir Francis Bacon He was an English Philosopher statesman and scientist also lover of bacon Invented the baconian method he also discovered bacon The Baconian method is now known as the scientific method
Rene Descartes A French philosopher who spent most of his live in the Dutch Republic He is the father of modern philosophy He influenced mathematics so much they named the Cartesian Coordinate system after him
Sir Isaac Newton He was an English physicist mathematician and astronomer He discovered universal gravitation and the laws of motion he discovered fig newtons He built the first practical reflecting telescope

John Locke An English philosopher, who was known for the development of the social contract theory and poetical philosophy.
Thomas Hobbes An English philosopher who helped establish the philosophy of social contract and the fundamentals of liberal thought.

Mary Wollstonecraft An English Feminist and Author who was born in London in 1759 Was once a governess in Ireland Wrote Vindication of the rights of woman Wanted equality between sexes in education and opportunity Also wrote a vindication of the rights of man
The Vindication of the Rights of Woman A book about woman's rights, written by Mary Wollstonecraft.
The Social Contract A explanation of an appropriate relationship between the people and their government.
The General Will A concept in political philosophy, that has interest for the people as whole.
Briefly describe the Scientific Revolution and use two examples from our study Scientific revolution was the time when they discovered many new things in the study science EXAMPLES: Galileo and his telescope advancements. Sir Bacon and his Baconian Method of sciencetific process
Immanuel Kant defines enlightenment as "man's release from his self-incurred tutelage." Explain what Kant meant by this. He means that man should think for himself instead of relying on others and the government to think for him.
Compare the political views and the opinions on human understanding of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. How do their views differ on the two subjects? Hobbes thought kings should rule and Locke thought government should rule.
Describe the common themes of Enlightenment that we have established during our study. How do these themes then become the basis for creating a "new world" order in society? (Think about comparing the "Old World" with the "New World") They all talked about being enlightened and learning new things. They also revolutionized the way of thinking during their time periods. Most things they did back then are used now.
