UCMT Hydrotherapy

Quick study about the temperatures, protocols etc. regarding Hydrotherapy.

QuestionAnswer
Father of modern Hydrotherapy. Father Kneipp
Who brought Hydrotherapy to America? Benedict Lust and Henry Lindlar.
Define Hydrotherapy. The use of water in any of its three forms, (solid, liquid, or vapor) internally or externally, in the treatment of disease or trauma.
What is the main goal for hydrotherapy? Improving blood quality by manipulating its flow through the body.
By altering temperatures, how does hydrotherapy affect the body? It causes the body to make physiological changes to maintain homeostasis.
Why is blood important to the health of the body? It brings oxygen and nutrients to the body's tissues as well as transports metabolic waste and toxins away from them.
Hot Treatment temperature range 100 - 104 degrees farenheit
Tepid treatment temperaure range 80 - 91 degrees farenheit
Cold treatment temperature range 55 - 64 degrees farenheit
Physiological change(s) from short cold treatment 1st - vasoconstriction 2nd - vasodilation 3rd - vasoconstriction
How long is a short cold treatment less then 1 minute
Circulatory effect of short cold treatment increase in circulation, increase in metabolism
Physiological effect of long cold treatment vasoconstriction
how long is a long cold treatment more then 1 minute, no longer then 20 minutes
Circulatory effect of long cold treatment decrease in circulation, decrease in metabolism
List the stages of sensations when applying cold therapy in the correct order 1st - cold 2nd - pain 3rd - numbness
List the phases of soft tissue healing in the correct order 1st - Acute inflammatory phase 2nd - Subacute Phase 3rd - Chronic phase
What is the time period for 1st phase of soft tissue healing From initial injury to 7 days
What is the time period for 2nd phase of soft tissue healing 7 - 21 days after the injury.
What is the time period for 3rd phase of soft tissue healing After 21 days.
Boiling point temperature of water? 212 degrees farenheit
Freezing point temperature of water 32 degrees farenheit
Very cold treatment temperature range 32 - 54 degrees farenheit
Average body's core temperature 98.6 degrees farenheit
Perfect temperature for paraffin wax bath? 120 degrees farenheit
Temperature range for hydroculator heater 160 - 166 degrees farenheit
3 Cold specific contraindications Cold Allergies, Acute Asthma, Raynaud's Phenomenon
3 Hot specific contraindications Acute inflammation, known malignancy, heat sensitivities, sunburn, burn, recent/potential hemorrhage, infection, hypertension, varicose veins, anywhere liniments or heat rubs have been recently applied
What is done if the client reacts negatively to any treatment. Stop immediatly. (It may be able to be modified, so reassess)
3 signs for negative reaction to cold treatment. Cyanosis, Red marbling that spreads further then the area(s) treated, deep bone chilling pain lasting longer then a minute, uncontrollable shivering or shivering that lasts longer then 2 minutes, cold extremities
3 signs for negative reaction to hot treatment Fullness or congestion of head, dizziness, lightheadedness, faintness, fatigue, nausea
What treatments can be used in the acute phase of soft tissue healing? COLD ONLY
What treatments can be used in the sub-acute phase of soft tissue healing? Cold and mild heat
What treatments can be used in the chronic phase of soft tissue healing? May use treatments of any temperature.
List three benefits of cold water treatments Analgesic, (pain relief), Anesthetic, (numbing), Antispasmodic, burn management, stimulant, (especially in short duration, tonic, (by causing contraction of muscle tissue.
How long is a short heat treatment less then 5 minutes
How long is a long heat treatment more than 5 minutes, no longer than 30 minutes?
Physiological effect of short heat treatment Vasodilation
Physiological effect of long heat treatment Venous stasis
Circulatory effect of short heat treatment increased circulation, increased metabolism
Circulatory effect of long heat treatment decreased circulation, increased metabolism
What is the best duration and timing for one cycle in a contast treatment 3 minutes hot, 30 seconds cold
How many cycles should there be in one treatment session of contrast treatment? between 4 and 8 cycles.
How does contrast therapy physically assist the body? By causing the blood vessels to repeatedly open and close, thus causing a pumping action.
With intense contrast or heat treatments, always end using... Cold to return the body to a more natural state of homeostasis
What is the principle of diversion? using both hot and cold treatments at the same time on different parts of the body in order to divert the amount of blood to and from areas of the body.
What is erythema? Reddening of the skin.
What is vasoconstriction? Shrinking blood vessel.
What is vasodilation? Expanding blood vessel.
Epistaxis Nosebleed
Diaphoresis Profuse sweating
