Which pope was known by the nickname "il papa terribile"? Pope Julius II was nicknamed this. (Pg. 69)
Name two (2) achievements of the Renaissance popes. 1.) They organized teams to find ancient statues. 2.) They ordered workers to clean sewage from the Tiber River. 3.) What is "Humanism"? This is the name for a new educational program proposed by Petrarch that emphasized the classics (such as epics by the Greek poet Homer and philosophic writings by Plato). Stressed "the dignity of man". Put confidence in human potential. (Pg. 32)
What is a primary source? A historical artifact written or created during the time when the event under study took place.
What is a secondary source? A historical source/ artifact written or created after the event under study took place.
What is a latitude line? An imaginary line that runs east to west across the Earth's surface and measures the distance north or south from the equator. The equator is an example.
What is a longitude line? An imaginary line the runs north to south across the Earth's surface and measures the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian (or 0 degrees longitude). The Prime Meridian is a line of longitude.
What European city and country does the Prime Meridian go through? It runs through Greenwich, England.
The statement "In Muncie, Burger King is next to the mall" represents what kind of location? This statement represents relative location.
The statement "In Muncie, Hoosier Academy is located at 40 degrees north latitude, 85 degrees west longitude" represents what kind of location? This statement represents absolute location.
Which Renaissance painter created "The School of Athens"? Raphael painted this famous work of art during the Renaissance.
Who was Michelangelo's "patron"? Pope Julius II was this Renaissance painter's patron.
How did cities form in northern Italy? Near the end of the Middle Ages, trading posts near rivers or seas turned into cities when merchants bought charters for the town from local landowners. The charters allowed the merchants to set up a system of government. (Pg. 37)
What is a "city-state"? These were areas with a principal city (where most people lived) and the land around it. Kings ruled some of these places.
Which Renaissance architect is known for building the duomo Santa Maria del Fiore? Fillipo Brunelleschi built this famous building. It took 16 years to complete.
