World Studies Chapter 1

QuestionAnswer
What is a civilization? The production of food crops, population growth, government formation, and the development of writing and art.
Where did the first civilizations start? They started in the river valleys of Western Asia, Egypt, India, and China.
What is prehistory? The time before writing was invented.
Who are Mary and Louis Leakey? The first people to discover the world's earliest known human in Olduvai Gorge, Africa.
What is archaeology? The study of past societies from what people left behind.
What are artifacts? Artifacts are tools, pottery, paintings, weapons, buildings, and househould items.
What is anthropology? The study of human life and culture.
What are australopithecines? They are the hominids that are known as southern apes.
What are hominids? Humans and other creatures that walk upright.
What is a homo erectus? This is an upright human being.
What is a homo sapien? This is a wise human being.
What two groups developed from homo sapiens? Neanderthals and homo sapiens sapiens
What were the earliest tools made of? stone
What does Paleolithic mean? when humans used simple tools.
What did Paleolithic people gather for food? nuts, berries, fruits, grain, and plants.
What is a nomad? people who travel from place to place.
Who was the first to discover fire? homo erectus
When did the Ice Age end? 8000 B.C.
How long has art been around?? prehistory.
What does Neolithic mean? new stone age.
What is domestication? adapt for human use.
What is the oldest city? Jericho
Where is Catal Huyuk located? Turkey.
What is culture? the way of life that people follow.
Where did most cities develop? river valleys.
What do governments do? regulate human activity.
What where the first types of governments? Monarchs
Who supervised rituals? Priests
Who dominated Neolithic societies? The upper class.
Who were the bottom class of Neolithic societies? The slaves.
Why did people use writing? keep accurate records.
What does B.C. mean? before Christ.
What does A.D. mean? anno domini, in the year of the Lord.
What does C.E. mean? common era.
What does B.C.E. mean? before common era.
