Janissaries In the Ottoman empire, an elite corps of troops personally loyal to the sultan; made up of Christian boys who were taken from their parents and converted to Islam.
Pax Mongolica The "Mongol peace"; between about 1250 and about 1350 when Mongols ruled most of Eurasia.
Safavid The dynast of Shi'i Muslims that ruled persian from the 1500s to the 1700s.
Seljuks Turkish converts to Islam who seized the Baghdad government from the Abbasids.
Umayyad dynasty The caliphs resident in Damascus from 661 to 750 c.e.
Yuan dynasty Official term for the Mongol dynasty that ruled China between 1279D 1368.
