Apartheid The Afrikaans term for segregation of the races in South Africa.
Iranian Revolution The militant Muslim and anti-Western movement led by the Ayatollah Khomeini that ousted the shah of Iran through massive demonstrations in 1979.
Maastricht Treaty Signed in 1991 by members of the European Community; committed them to closer political-economic ties.
Palestine Liberation Organization An organization founded in the 1960s by Palestinians expelled from Israel; main political Palestinian organization.
Six Day War The 1967 conflict between Israel and its neighbors in which Israel gained much territory.
solidarity The umbrella organization founded by Lech Walesa and other anticommunist Poles in 1981 to recover Polish freedom; banned for eight years, but continued underground until it was acknowledged as the government in 1989.
third world a term used after world war II to denote countries and peoples in underdeveloped, formely colonial areas of Asia,Africa, and Latin America; the First World was the wes under U.S. leadership, and the Second World was the communist states under soviet lead.
