Complexity the state of being intricate or complicated. Complexity allowed simple ancient societies to evolve into complex societies, which eventually became civilizations. Complex attributes include armed military force, a writing system, and trading.
Ice Age a period in history when ice sheets were extensive across earth's surface. It covered most of the planet with ice for millions of years, thus causing all civilizations in range to be wiped out. Only those in tropical zones not effected continued.
Goldilocks Principle states that something must be within certain margins, rather than extremes. This principle allowed ancient civilizations to find the "just right" for their specific needs and wants. It created a variety of different and personalized civilizations.
Gaia the Earth as a goddess, daughter of Chaos OR the earth viewed as a vast self-regulating organism. Believed to be Mother Earth, people in ancient Greek/Roman civilizations viewed the earth as a being, which made them care for the earth as it was alive
Agrarian Revolution development of agriculture. Ancient societies turned to agriculture as a food source, rather than hunting & gathering. It needed more workers and thus farmer communities had more children, which then grew into organized communities.
Entropy lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into. Entropy in ancient civilizations brought a need for order in daily life, and thus social class and hierarchy was created.
Emergence the process of coming into being, or of becoming important or prominent. Emergence is the way complex societies are created from simple interactions. New and logical structures, patterns, and properties emerged from self organization in complex societi
Integration the action or process of merging. Integration created governing institutions that emerged to organize and control different sections of complex societies. People gave up their rights to others in order for them to solve a widespread problem or need.
Paradox a statement that seems contradictory and yet is perhaps true. It is a paradox how past civilizations teach us about the present. Prominent factors in "ancient" civilizations such as reading and writing are still prized today in the modern world.
Theory a system of ideas intended to explain something. Theory allowed ancient civilizations to explain something that was otherwise unexplainable, with evidence. It was the start of a need for knowledge and education.
Evolution the gradual development of something; from a simple to a more complex . It has allowed simple societies to evolve into complex civilizations with the ability for its people to read/write, form a government, form an army, and believe in a religion.
Regime a government, esp. an authoritarian one; a system or planned way of doing things. Regime in ancient civilizations created order and enforced the idea of controlling it's people by use of military, single rulers (such as a King), or dictators.
