Complexity Theory The study of complex and chaotic systems and how order, pattern, and structure can arise from them. New area of science which some people have said could change our lives as much as Michael Faraday's discovery of electricity and its properties.
Ice Age A period of time about 300 million years ago during which ice sheets cover at least the Earth's polar areas. It is believed that dinosaurs were extinct because of this.
Goldilocks Principle Applies to any situation where only a particular range of conditions is agreeable. Venus too hot, Mars too cold but Earth, just right.
Gaia Idea that the Earth is a living organism. All indiginous believe that Earth is a living thing.
Agrarian Revolution Man no longer hunted for food, shortage possibility decreased worldwide. It slowly crept into most lives of people over the globe, spanning over the years until the Industrial Revolution took off in the 18th century in Europe.
Entropy Entropy (second law of thermodynamics along with first one) and energy and thier relationship are fundamental to an understanding not just physics but life. In 1872, Clausius formulates what becomes known as the two laws of thermodynamics.
Emergence it is the way complex systems/patterns come from a multiplicity of simple interactions. The Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland was created 50-60 million years ago when subjected to volcanic activity.
Integration The act or instance of integrating a racial, religious, or ethnic group. Cacao beans were an integral part of the Olmecs diet and culture from as early as 600 B.C.
Paradox A statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth. We have taller building today, we grew shorter tempers; widder freeways, but narrower views.
Theory Is a tested and testable concept which is used to explain an occurance. Isaac Newton came up with a theory about gravity in the 17th century and it proved to be testable and correct.
Evolution Also known as biological or organic evolution. The change over long periods of time in one or more inherited traits in a population or organisms. EX: The lessening of fur/hide depending on temperature, camoflauge, etc.
Regime A mode or system of rule or government. The French Regime was the system that resulted from years of civil wars, internal conflicts, etc.
