QuestionAnswer
Complexity The state or quality of being intricate. This allows us to solve difficult problems, such as computations. (computation complexity theory)
Ice Age The most recent glacial period, which occurred during the Pleistocene Epoch and ended about 10,000 years ago. Great sheets of ice covered much of the land. This helped to shape the land we have today.
Goldilocks Principle The Goldilocks Principle states that something must fall within certain margins, as opposed to reaching extremes. This is used in the Rare Earth Hypothesis to state that a planet must neither be too far away from, nor too close to the sun to support life.
Gaia The goddess of the earth. The gaia hypothesis proposes that all organisms and their surroundings on Earth are closely integrated to form a single and self-regulating complex system, maintaining the conditions for life on the planet.
Agrarian Revolution A change in farming methods that allowed for a greater production of food. The importance was a population explosion due to the higher availability of food, and an increase in agricultural productivity and vast improvements in farm technology.
Entropy A measure of the disorder of a system. Data loss in information transmission is the concept of entropy- a great deal of useful energy is dissipated or lost into what seems like a state of immeasurable randomness.
Emergence The appearance of new properties or species in the course of development or evolution. Emergence is the base to the theories of integrative levels and complex systems.
Integration The act of combining or adding parts to make a unified whole. In history, integration of the public schools of America was an important step towards equality among races.
Paradox A statement or proposition that, despite sound reasoning, leads to a conclusion that seems logically unacceptable, or self-contradictory. Paradoxes are used in the Zeno Paradox math problem, which proves a rule of motion.
Theory Theories are analytical tools for understanding, explaining, and making predictions about a given subject matter. Theories are the basis of experiments and without them, many things wouldn't have been proved or discovered.
Evolution A gradual development, to a more complex form based on adaptation. This is important because it was a breakthrough theory in the explanation of man's evolution from primate.
Regime A social system or order. It shaped the modern world during a time of Eurasian dominance and helps explain modern economics and how they developed.
