Ice Age A glacial episode during a past geological period; The series of glacial episodes during the Pleistocene period
Goldilocks Principle States that something must fall within certain margins, as opposed to reaching extremes. It is used, for example, in the Rare Earth hypothesis to state that a planet must neither be too far away from, nor too close to the sun to support life.
Gaia The Earth personified as a goddess, daughter of Chaos. She was the mother and wife of Uranus (Heaven); their offspring included the Titans and the Cyclopes; The earth viewed as a vast self-regulating organism
agrarian revolution Transformation of British agriculture during 1700s, characterized by enclosure of common land & introduction of technological innovations such as seed drill & rotation of crops. Resulted in population explosion due to higher availability of food.
entropy The tendency for all matter and energy in the universe to evolve toward a state of inert uniformity; Inevitable and steady deterioration of a system or society.
emergence The process of coming into being, or of becoming important or prominent; The process of coming into view or becoming exposed after being concealed
integration The intermixing of people or groups previously segregated.
paradox A statement or proposition that, despite sound reasoning, leads to a logically unacceptable or self-contradictory conclusion; A seemingly absurd statement or proposition that when investigated may prove to be true.
theory A supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, esp. one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained; A set of principles on which the practice of an activity is based.
evolution The process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.
regime A government, esp. an authoritarian one; A system or planned way of doing things, esp. one imposed from above.
