What EXACTLY is the Industrial Revolution? A time in a country's history when it undergoes a rapid change from an agricultural to a factory-based economy.
Where did this "Industrial Revolution" take place? England in the 1700s
James Watt This inventor coined the term "horse power", created the fire engine, and refined the steam engine by adding a condenser.
What is "Capitalism"? An economic system in which all or most of the means of production and distribution, such as land, factories, railroads, etc., are privately owned and are operated for a profit.
Define ""Apprentice" Young boys learning a craft.
Define "Journeyman" Completed apprenticeship, but does not yet have a lot of experience or skill
"Manufacturing" Work place away from the home where tasks are broken down into steps, which are done by different people. (think of the assembly line we did in class)
"Cottage Industry" The system of home centered hand manufacturing that preceded the Industrial Revolution. (Translation: "Everybody worked and sold the goods they made at home BEFORE the Industrial Revolution")
"Capital" Money or wealth used in trade, in manufacturing, or in any business.
Describe the working conditions of the Industrial Revolution. All people, young and old, worked near dangerous machines and fumes that could kill or sever (cut off) limbs. Many people died and were often hungry and pay was little. No education for kids.
